More than 16,000 Goldfields homes are without power after a powerful storm lashed Kalgoorlie yesterday.Kalgoorlie Hospital was among the buildings that lost electricity after power lines were brought down by strong winds yesterday afternoon.

Most of the Kalgoorlie CBD is without electricity today.

There are scenes of destruction in the city centre, with trees across roads and cars.

The storm has prompted panic buying at the city’s only running store and businesses are scrambling to obtain generators to continue operating.

“Early this morning we were able to restore power to a feeder line in to the CBD, which has restored power to some petrol stations and ATMs,” Western Power said.

Western Power has sent extra crews to the Goldfields city, where more than 173 cases of damage have been reported.
